Summer Trip #2

Back

Here are a few images of my trip to Big Brutus in West Mineral, KS. West Mineral is in Southeastern Kansas and was home to a coal deposit. How better to get that coal out of the ground then to build a huge electric shovel? Well they built it and it still stands there. I think it is the second largest electric shovel in the world. You can stand in the bucket of the machine and walk through the innards. It does cost something like $3-5 to get into the machine itself, but it is well worth it. Besides, what else would anyone be doing in West Mineral Kansas? It doesn't move anymore but there is a tour and the videos and models in the visitor's center are very interesting.

Everyone crowds around one of Hubbell's Rubble sculptures. These are made out of scraps of metal. This one is supposed to be something like the Loch Ness Monster. However, it bears the inscription "I Love People" on the front of the sculpture for those who may have some fear of large metal sculptures found in Kansas that resemble fabled sea-monsters.
Here are a few pictures from a recreation of the little house on the prairie. No, it isn't the real house, it's just a estimation of what it might have looked like. Really, none of the entire area is old, they just created it on the approximate spot of the house. There were also lots of wasps and not much authenticity, but it was on the way, so no big deal for us.
