British Car Rally: Running around rural Holland

06/10/2002
Amsterdam/Surrounding area

Yes, this is hard to see, but it is a ferocious farm dog. One of our items to pick up was a potato, and this was a potato farm, so we figured that we would drive in, find a stray potato and drive off. This dog ran wildly around our car barking and perhaps trying to get run over out of misery. In any case, we distracted him while Susan ran out to get the potato.

And there it is, and no major bite marks! (on Susan or the potato!)

Next we had to find a brussel sprout, and evidently this field looked very brusselly to Susan and William so we stopped. Well, whaddya know, it was a brussel sprout field and Susan's trek to the field wasn't in vain.
Img_3111

Look at that nice brussel sprout, almost makes you not want to clean your plate!
Img_3113

I don't quite knjow where this is, probably around Rijnsaterwoude. But, here's an IH (International Harvester) dealer, of Case IH fame, of New Holland/Case New Holland/CNH fame. The funny thing is -- it's in HOLLAND!
Img_3116

This is some large statue of a guy who came to Holland with some religious group and was the first to do something or the other, so William, Susan, and a member of a competing team paused for a celebrity photo.
Img_3118

Damn...delayed by another crazy bridge. Time matters in this car rally and we're nearly late!
Img_3121

Ok, this wasn't funny, we got to the ferry crossing the Amstel River just as one was leaving -- carrying the competing team as well! They chose to taunt us from afar...how frustrating...
Img_3125

Well, in short time the ferry came back and here's a view from the middle of the crossing.
Img_3129

A view form the inside of the car of the far shore.
Img_3130

Ah! There's a windmill, built in 1717 and quite a pretty one at that.
Img_3132

In the distance, a silo displays the sole tulip in view.

Just when you thought we were done with ferries, one more to the island of KAAG! Incidentally I'd like to comment that you shouldn't name an island KAAG, it sounds like a place where superheroes are imprisoned in deep dark dungeons while evil masterminds attempt to rule the world.

So, we skip the few remaining items to meet the deadline, rush to the restaurant and drop our bag of goodies and artwork at the judging table just in time. The artwork to the right was drawn by Susan and was meant to be a plastic bus of some kind...nobody else in the group really understood what it was, but hey I'm sure it's very artistic.
Img_3141

Finally, the trophy! Ok, so it's not ours, but it goes back to the 1950s and such - talk about tradition.
Img_3145

And the cup as well.
Img_3146

A nice little restaurant on KAAG, but I couldn't help wondering how to get to the deep, dark dungeons.
Img_3149

Other groups made windmills as their artwork, quite impressive.
Img_3151

Ah, the winners! What luck for them, what sorrow for our hard-working team...
Img_3153

More sorrow - we got LAST place! By skipping those last couple items on KAAG we missed out on 12+ points and ruined our score. So, William holds our other piece of art that we bought (now owned by Susan) and Susan holds our prize for last place, a pair of plastic fried eggs. That is very Dutch you know - eggs and all...

Relive the experience all over again!
