Saints and Sinners: La Sagrada Familia and Las Ramblas / Merce 2002

21/09/2002
Barcelona

After a metro trip and a strange little train that goes diagonally up the side of the mountain, Nate and I reached the Jewish Mountain, montjuic. Once again, without a tour guide I can't tell you WHY it has that name, but it's a nice mountain I suppose...very sturdy and all. Here you see La Sagrada Familia in the distance as another gondola takes us higher up on the mountain to an old military fort along the ocean.

The old palace of Barcelona, now an art museum I believe

Ah, here's the military fort, nice gardens and such here

The Olympic Stadium, from the Barcelona Olympics, on Montjuic
Img_2722

This was a neat little shadow trick. There are two statues along either side of this entrance to the stadium. The angle of the sun placed the other statue right below and diagonal from this one. It's a race...

Probably one of my favorite photos from Barcelona, this is a communications relay tower in the same area as the Olympic Stadium with some tubes around it for decoration. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava, famous for the Sydney Opera House amongst other buildings (including the new Milwaukee Art Museum). At the base of the monument it says "Telefonica" I suppose that says something about how long it'll stick around...you don't see many ancient monuments around these days that say "Al's Butcher Shop" or "Bob's Chariot Repair." Too bad, the structure is nice, though, in a modern kind of way.

I think this was a water venue for the olympics near the stadium, not sure though. Nice scene with father and son.

This is the Magic Fountain, playing daily starting at 19:30 I think and going through 24:00. On the hour it begins a musical (mostly classical) program that syncs with the water display from the fountain.
Img_2752

Many, many, many tourists stand around waiting for something else to happen, but it just plays music and has colors. It's not that bad, mind you, but for the number of people you'd think it would start throwing out free money or something.

Wait...I think there is free money coming out from the center there...darn, I knew I should have gotten closer.

In the back you can see a dome from the museum nicely lit with a group of seachlights.

This was really fun, two street performers were doing a fireshow near the fountain which made a nice timed-exposure with the backdrop and some action in front.

Another fountain, above the "magic" one...no money here either.

Back to the serrated mountain!
